How to Get Fat Like a Sumo Wrestler :P

May 16, 20121 min read

Yes, you read that right.

If you actually wanted to gain weight quickly, sumo wrestlers have it down to a science.

While their lifestyle is extreme, it’s also a fascinating look at how timing, habits, and routine impact metabolism. And understanding what causes weight gain can actually help you do the opposite.

Here’s how it works…

1. Skip Breakfast

Sumo wrestlers avoid eating early in the day. By delaying their first meal, their metabolism stays slower for longer, conserving energy and promoting fat storage once food is finally consumed.

2. Exercise on an Empty Stomach

They train before eating, which further slows metabolism and encourages the body to hold onto calories rather than burn them efficiently.

3. Sleep After Eating

After large meals, they rest or nap. This tells the body to store energy rather than burn it, increasing fat storage.

4. Eat Late at Night

Eating large meals close to bedtime triggers insulin spikes and encourages fat storage rather than nutrient use.

5. Always Eat in Groups

Studies show people eat significantly more when dining socially. More food, more calories, more weight gain.

So if your goal is not to gain weight, do the opposite of everything above.

Eat earlier.
Move more throughout the day.
Fuel your body regularly.
Avoid skipping meals.

And most importantly, build habits that support your lifestyle instead of fighting it.

For me, starting my day with something simple (like a shake) helps me avoid the “no breakfast, overeat later” cycle completely.
