How to Stay Hydrated in Cold Weather
Staying hydrated in the winter can actually be harder than in the summer. When it’s cold, we don’t feel as thirsty, and it’s easy to forget that our bodies still need just as much water to function properly.
Here are a few simple ways to stay hydrated when the temperatures drop.
1. A Water Bottle Is KEY
Have a water bottle with you at all times. Ideally, one that’s easy to carry, doesn’t leak, and doesn’t sweat all over your bag.
I work from home, so I usually use my favorite mason jar. But when I’m out, I grab a BPA-free bottle with a handle or hook so it’s always nearby. The more convenient it is, the more likely you are to actually drink from it.
2. Water Doesn’t Only Come From Water
Okay, that sounds weird, but hear me out.
You get hydration from more than just plain water. Whole foods like fruits and vegetables contain a lot of water. Soups, broths, and herbal teas count too. Even adding extra water to smoothies or shakes helps.
If you’re eating real food and drinking things like tea or broth, it all adds up. Hydration doesn’t have to mean chugging plain water all day.
3. Schedule It
This tip is a game changer.
Set reminders on your phone. Use a water tracking app. Or pair drinking water with a habit you already have.
One of my favorites when I worked in an office was refilling my water every time I went to the bathroom. It sounds simple, but it works. Eventually it becomes automatic, and you don’t even have to think about it.
4. Try a Cold–Warm Swap
If it’s cold outside, drinking icy water can feel miserable. You’re not imagining that.
If cold water turns you off, try room temperature or warm water instead. Warm water with a little lemon is especially easy to sip and surprisingly comforting. You may find you drink way more without even trying.
5. Don’t Cancel Out Your Efforts
This one’s important.
Caffeine and alcohol can both contribute to dehydration. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them, but it does mean you should be intentional about balancing them with extra water.
If you have coffee, follow it with water. If you have a drink, hydrate before and after. Small adjustments like this make a big difference over time.
Hydration doesn’t have to be complicated or extreme. A few small changes can completely shift how you feel day to day.
